Our canned octopus is from Conservas do Cambados, a Spanish company specializing in gourmet preserves. They are experts at letting their products do the talking with a minimalistic approach to taste, and this also applies to the squid. These are small squids that are put whole in the tin with both head and arms, and the consistency is far from the rubbery one we know from the large squids used for calamari. Our octopuses are tender and delicious, with a mild and characteristic taste.

What can I use canned squid for?

Grøndal's octopus in oil has a delicious and soft taste that goes well with the tapas table. They can be fried if they need a little more expression, and are also fantastic with pasta or salads. The mild taste and the delicious, tender meat are surprising, and show the breadth of how squid can taste. If you need a more visually striking octopus on the table, we have octopuses in our own ink. Octopus ink is a classic color. and flavors for many years, and this gives a very special and delicious canned squid.

It gives a very special appearance and a very unique taste. It can be used to color dishes, and can, for example, be used for an absolutely fantastic-looking squid risotto.

Octopuses come in many different species and appearances. But roughly speaking, octopuses can be divided into two categories; eight-armed and ten-armed squid, and we have both types of squid canned. Although the division of the squid is simple, it is different with the taste and texture. When you make canned octopus from ten-armed octopus, you usually use the cone or the housing. That is, the upper part and not the arms, as is the case with eight-armed octopus in a can.

Tenderness means everything when it comes to squid. And there is a big difference in how ten-armed and eight-armed squid are transformed into beautiful preserves. If you have tried your hand at squid in the kitchen, you will probably have learned that a Danish ten-armed squid should be flash-fried. If, on the other hand, you have flash-fried an eight-armed octopus, it requires some very good teeth and jaw muscles to thicken through them, unless, as in Japan, you have massaged the octopus well and thoroughly.

What are octopuses?

Octopus is a term for a large group of molluscs that live in the oceans all over the Earth. They come in all sizes, from tiny cuddly octopuses to colossal, ten-armed monsters. The Danish waters contain various species of squid, but the local squid are not yet widely eaten in Denmark.

Octopuses are much more traditionally eaten in the countries along the Mediterranean, where they are included in salads, as a starter and as an ingredient in dishes such as paella and pasta. Since squids come in many different sizes, it is also different what you use them for in cooking, but because the meat has an exciting texture, it can be used in virtually all dishes that need a bit of bite. Our squid are caught along the Galician coast, where the stock is large and the conditions are perfect for growth and spawning.
